The No-Chemical Oven Clean: How a Steamer and Brillo Pads Saved My Lungs

There is a golden rule when it comes to household chores: The longer an item sits on your to-do list, the longer it will actually take to complete.
For most of us, cleaning the oven sits at the absolute bottom of that list.
Last week, my girlfriend and I finally tackled ours. Normally, we make the mistake of waiting six months or more between cleanings, which turns the oven into a literal carbon graveyard. This time around, we were smart and caught it a bit earlier. Don’t get your hopes up—it still took a while—but jumping on it sooner made it infinitely easier than the horror show of waiting too long.
Here is exactly how we tackled the grease without using a single drop of toxic spray.
Why We Ditched the "Set It and Forget It" Oven Cleaners
I absolutely cannot stand standard, store-bought chemical oven cleaners. I can’t breathe around them, the fumes are brutal, and my absolute biggest turnoff is that awful chemical smell burning off the first time you turn the oven back on.
Since the harsh stuff was out of the question, we decided to try an alternative: our household steam cleaner.
The steamer turned out to be a massive help, especially on the inside of the glass door where grease loves to bake on. However, we encountered a roadblock. The steamer came with stiff metal scrubber attachments, but we were terrified they would scratch and permanently damage the oven's interior coating.
Instead, we stuck exclusively to the nylon tip attachments. The nylon tips did a great job lifting the base layer of baked-on grime, but it still wasn’t quite hitting the standard to satisfy the boss. We needed a backup plan.
The Tag-Team Strategy: Steam + Brillo Pads
To finish the job, I turned to an old reliable standby: Brillo steel wool soap pads.
Now, I know what you might be thinking—isn't steel wool risky? While Brillo pads are made of steel wool, they are woven much finer and are packed with built-in soap, making them nowhere near as coarse or abrasive as the heavy-duty metal tips on the steamer or traditional loose steel wool. I scrubbed away and saw absolutely zero visible damage to my oven's interior coating. Once we introduced the Brillo pads, we developed a highly effective tag-team strategy. We worked one side of the oven at a time using a "divide and conquer" method:
- My girlfriend would blast an area with the high-heat steam to loosen the grease.
- I immediately followed right behind her with the Brillo pad to scrub it away.
Repeating this cycle a few times successfully stripped away mostly everything we had the energy to fight with.
The Real Challenge: Getting the Soap Out
Getting the grease loose is only half the battle. Once you scrub an oven with soapy steel wool, you are left with a messy, sudsy residue. Removing that soap from a cramped metal box without making a massive mess is a serious logistical challenge.
In truth, that Brillo soap is incredibly stubborn. What sounds simple on paper actually turned into a grueling 5-step process of trial, error, and heavy rinsing. Here is the exact breakdown of how we finally got it all out:
- Step 1: Wipe up the heavy suds with a few dry paper towels.
- Step 2: Hit the area with the steamer again to melt down the remaining soap film.
- Step 3: Wipe it down with a damp, regular towel.
- Step 4: Realize there is still a cloudy soap layer, and blast it with the steamer again.
- Step 5: Wipe it clean one final time with a fresh, wet cloth.
It turns out "rinse and repeat" isn't just a rule for shampoo anymore—it took multiple rounds of aggressive wiping and steaming before the metal actually felt clean. Once we were completely satisfied that no soap residue remained, we gave the entire inside one final pass with the steamer and dried it thoroughly with a clean cloth.
The Burn-In Test (and a Lesson for Next Time)
To make absolutely sure we got everything out, we closed the door and turned the oven up to 400°F for about 15 minutes. We stood by to watch for any unexpected smoke or that dreaded smell of burning soap chemicals. Success! Everything went perfectly. The oven isn’t 100% spotless, but it is clean, usable, and didn't require a hazmat suit to get there.
Funny enough, just a few minutes after we finished, my girlfriend stumbled across an article on her phone—one of those classic "Google is listening to your conversations" moments. The article offered tips for deep-cleaning ovens and suggested turning the oven on a very low temperature for a bit before you even start cleaning to help loosen up the cold grease.
We didn't get to try it this time, but it sounds like a solid theory. We will definitely be testing that trick out next time around!
